Christopher Clarke

1959-2026

We are so very sad to announce the unexpected passing of Chris on June 13, 2026. Chris was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 8, 1959. He was a much-loved son of Harold and Doris (Pelham) Clarke.

Chris was a Maritimer raised and educated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He grew up in the Fairmont subdivision and lived across from a big park and school, where many games of ball hockey and baseball were played.

He graduated from Halifax West High School in 1977 and went on to earn a Commerce degree from St. Mary’s University, graduating in 1981.

A passionate athlete and avid sports fan, Chris had a lifelong love of hockey and baseball. During his university years, he played for the Halifax Lions and varsity hockey for the St. Mary’s Huskies. He continued playing Senior Men’s and recreational hockey throughout his life. He also spent countless hours coaching minor hockey and baseball in Ottawa for both his son’s and daughter’s competitive teams. He was a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Yankees. He will not rest until the Leafs win the Cup!

Chris also dedicated over 33 years to the Federal Public Service. Throughout his career, he served in numerous leadership roles before retiring from the Canada Border Services Agency in 2015 as a Director. He remained active with CBSA following his retirement working part-time as a board member for the National Officer Recruitment Program conducting interviews.

In retirement, Chris enjoyed travelling. He spent several years wintering in Florida, where he built close friendships. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren in Florida when they would visit every Spring Break. He also travelled to South America and the Caribbean with friends and family. 

Chris is survived by his parents, Harold and Doris, along with his loving wife of 44 years, Darlene (Riley) Clarke. He leaves behind his three children, Laura (Elias), Emily (Alison), and Jeffrey, and his three beloved granddaughters, Savannah, Georgia, and baby Charlotte. He was a doting grandfather. Chris is also survived by his brothers, Doug and David, his brother-in-law Mike (Edith) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chris will be fondly remembered and greatly missed for his quick wit, sense of humour, generosity, numerous Costco runs, and his unwavering commitment to both his work and family. He had strong opinions, particularly about politics and there were many lively debates at family gatherings throughout the years! 

A Celebration of Life for Chris will take place at Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa, ON, on Sunday, September 20, 2026 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Rest easy, dear Chris, Dad, and Papa. We love you.
