In memory of

Christine Fisher

1940 - 2026

Fisher, Christine Heather Edwina

December 7, 1940 – May 14, 2026

Christine Heather Edwina Fisher, née Heslop, passed away on May 14, 2026, at the Glebe Centre where she had been resident for several years. She is survived by her daughter Deborah (Milenko) and by her former husband Anthony Fisher.

She was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Heslop and her three sisters, Violet Gibson, Isabelle Luland, and Annie Kinnaird.  Christine will be much missed by her relatives in England and in Rochester, New York, as well as by many friends in Canada, particularly Michael Robinson.

Christine spent her youth in the northern English town of East Boldon, attending Dame Allan School in Newcastle-on-Tyne, at which she made lifelong friends, including June Murray, whom she was later to meet again in Ottawa.  Later, Christine met and married Tony, with whom she had daughter Deborah.   The family lived in Paris for two years, where Christine enhanced her excellent French language skills.

In Canada, Christine acquired first a bachelor’s, then a master’s degree in English literature at Carleton University.  She much enjoyed teaching in an elementary school in Ottawa before she took up a position for Parliament as a Committees Clerk for the House of Commons, where she stayed until her retirement.

Throughout her life Christine maintained an enthusiastic interest in literature, theatre, music, gardening, and travel.  She acted in amateur theatre, sang in choirs, and was a long-standing member of a Carleton book group.  Her frequent travels were often taken in company with her friend Mary Huband, whom she had met at Carleton. Christine also wrote a novel, which, alas, was never published.

Christine was a warm and supportive friend to many people.  Her intelligence, her sense of humour, her knowledge of literature, and her ability to cook, entertain, and delight her friends in social gatherings were tremendously appreciated.

After a period of decline, Christine has left her friends bereft, but with many rich memories.

A memorial service will be held at the premises of the Funeral Co-operative of Ottawa, 419 St. Laurent Boulevard, Ottawa on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 1 pm.

Sympathy Messages

I have wonderful memories of Christine. Foremost might be the flight we took with a delegation on the German government plane. That was a ' times have changed' moment for both of us.

I had the pleasure of working with Christine at the House of Commons, and she was a delightful colleague. I especially appreciated her sense of humor and thoughtfulness in our sometimes stressful work environment.
