Robert de Mestral (10 septembre 1946 - 2 janvier 2023)
La famille de Robert a la tristesse de vous annoncer qu'il est décédé brutalement à l'âge de 76 ans. Après 50 ans de mariage, il laisse derrière lui son épouse Lorayne (née Berry). Il était un père aimant pour sa fille, Berry, et un merveilleux grand-père pour son petit-fils, Hector. Lui survivent ses frères et sœurs Armand (Rosalind), Charles (Marie-Josée) et Jacqueline et leurs familles, y compris leurs enfants et petits-enfants. Lui survivent également ses beaux-parents Michael (Cathie), Ian (Carol), David (Roseanne), sa belle-sœur Denise Berry ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces. En outre, il manquera cruellement à ses amis proches David, Erik (Rebecca) et Mika Husband.
Né à Montréal, Robert a déménagé en Angleterre avec sa famille alors qu'il était un jeune garçon. Il y a fréquenté la Whitgift School à Surrey avec ses frères. Par la suite, la famille est revenue au Canada, s'installant à Rouyn-Noranda, au Québec, où il a obtenu son diplôme d'études secondaires avant de fréquenter l'Université Queen's à Kingston, en Ontario.
Pendant ses études à Queen's, Robert a développé une passion pour le théâtre, ce qui l'a conduit à une longue et brillante carrière en tant que directeur technique et éducateur dans ce domaine. Il a commencé sa carrière à l'Université York, puis à l'École nationale de théâtre du Canada à Montréal et enfin au département de théâtre de l'Université d'Ottawa où il est resté pendant plus de 30 ans. Après sa retraite officielle, il est resté activement impliqué dans la communauté théâtrale et scénique d'Ottawa par le biais de la section 471 de l'IATSE, travaillant sur les nombreux projets variés qu'ils soutiennent au Centre national des Arts et avec la Commission de la capitale nationale, y compris de nombreuses productions de la fête du Canada.
Robert était un lecteur avide de connaissances, notamment d'histoire militaire, de généalogie, de futilités et d'affaires courantes. C'était un homme gentil, toujours prêt à donner un coup de main au besoin, et il était aimé et respecté par ceux qui l'ont connu et travaillé avec lui. Il était aimé et respecté par ceux qui le connaissaient et travaillaient avec lui. Il avait une manière douce avec les enfants qui manquera, en particulier à son petit-fils.

Bob was one of my top two favorite teachers at the Theatre Department of Ottawa U. Kind and funny, I will always remember his mix of instant coffee with powdered milk on his desk. He was such a wonderful person, it was a joy to learn from him.

He heard my voice in the stairwell, knew immediately who I was and greeted me so warmly. Such a loving, generous man he was. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

Ah ce Bob! J’ai appris le mélange des couleurs avec lui (avec les gobo d’éclairage!)! Je préserverai en souvenir un technicien doué pour plein de trucs, débrouillard, et toujours disponible pour aider les étudiants pour trouver des solutions, monter des décors, des éclairages, être présent, avec son expertise. Bob était tout un personnage au département de théâtre, passionné, plein de ressources, un peu grincheux mais toujours bienveillant; il nous a bien fait rire avec ses façons de faire et son petit sourire en coin.

Robert de Mestral
The University of Ottawa's Theatre Department, but also the entire theatre community of the region, in all languages, has just lost a colleague, a professor, a friend, a loved one. Everyone who has been involved in theatre here for the past fifty years knew Robert de Mestral, Bob to everyone, the former Technical Director of the Department. He was the epitome of competence coupled with unfailing benevolence.
His colleagues, generations of students, and outsiders who spent a few hours or a few months with us, remember this man whose only goal was to help. To help young people get into a business that is scary at first, to help creators achieve their goals, to help the theatre community grow and progress.
When Bob arrived in Ottawa, the Department did not yet exist and the fate of theatre within the University was far from assured. One of the key requirements was our ability to do productions. And this is where Bob's contribution was invaluable. His fair, convincing, and frugal plans were the reason we were able to convince the authorities of our viability. It is largely due to him that the Theatre Department exists today.
Thus, in addition to being a great man of the theatre, Bob, as one of the founders of the Department, will have made a significant contribution to the development of theatrical life in our region. We will remain infinitely grateful to him.
