I think if George had been my Dad he would have driven me to distraction but as my father-in-law he was the best ever. He was a very special person in my life and I suspect in the lives of others. I loved walking out to the back fields at the farm; he always had insights that had escaped my attention. I loved his puns and wordplay; his Brooklyn accent that he could reach from his childhood. I loved his enthusiasm for life … dancing, ceramics, banjo, sewing, bee keeping, the poems of Robert Frost, willows, and his mistaken interest in welding that resulted in the loss of his eyebrows. And I loved the relationship that he had with Mary; the two of them helped me fashion a better way of being in the world. I also owe it to him that I was married to his son; it was his suggestion, relayed to Mike, that made us realize that we did, despite mutual misperceptions, both want to get married. I miss the years of walking down to the locks with George, examining plants along the way and hearing stories of his youthful escapades. Thank you George for such a special enriching friendship and the continuing gift that is your family.

The death of an aged man of a full life is not a genuine tragedy but it brings a melancholy interval. In the case of George Argus we find the world a colder and less welcoming place. He was a fine scientist, a great conversationalist, an explorer of life and a friend to be missed. May he Rest In Peace dancing.

George a été un maître pour moi et m'a beaucoup aidé à comprendre les saules. Une grande perte pour la science, un ami.
