Frances Arbour

Michael - so glad you passed on Frances's picture. It absolutely glows. I have read the obituary a couple of times trying to get my head around all that Frances has done with her life. Such a little person and such a massive contribution to society. She kept her history well hidden. Sending love to you and Daniel, who I hope to meet.

Dear Michael, We were so sorry to hear of Fran's death. Please accept our condolences. Fran was admirable in her skills and indomitable in her person. She and your dad, Bob Carty, were an amazing team. We will remember both of them with great fondness.

Mes plus sincères sympathies. She was a wonderful person and lived a wonderful life. You can be proud of your Mom. She will be missed by many.

Michael, we stand with you in mourning a great female leader of progressive church initiatives. Frances truly blessed international human rights work and women's leadership. She was a figure I looked up to since I was 18 years old...(until I grew taller, of course!)...and then could call a friend for many, many years of common adventures! You certainly carry her light - and Bob's - forward today!

We first met Frances when she and Bob were organizing the youth visits to Central America. Frances thought long and hard about leaving the OLM to marry Bob, but it seemed to us she never regretted it. Her tireless commitment to Latin America did not falter. I sang with your Dad at St. Margaret Mary's in the church choir. I met your Mom a few times in church and at the house. I had no idea what an amazing woman she was! So sorry for your loss.

As Latin American I thanks the engagement of Frances and all those that helped our people, in the darkest hours of the dictatorships and Human Rights violations. She and others like she now are contemplating His Eternal Light.

I met Frances when I was studying in Canada. We had dinners and little walks together. Her awareness of Latin American problems, her warmth and her kind heart gave us the space to exchange with deepenes and joy. On behalf of the former Group for the Defense of Human Rights in Argentina and as one of the political refugees of the late 70's, I want to express our sorrow for Frances' departure. She was an fabulous advocate and a tireless worker for human rights and her support at the institutional and personal level was of immense value to all of us.
