In memory of

Edmond Cuylits

1945 - 2026

Edmond (Ed) Cuylits

March 7, 1945 – April 28, 2026

Ed was born during the “Hunger Winter” in the Netherlands to loving parents, Edmond A. and Dr. Maartje (Bordewijk). When he was 6, the family including his younger sister Jean, moved to Vancouver. Ed, a strong student, attended all schooling in Vancouver and ultimately achieved his Masters in Urban Planning at UBC.

From a very young age, Ed was fascinated by all modes of transportation. It is no wonder that his career centred around transportation mostly in the Department of Industry Trade and Commerce with the Federal Government. After retiring from his role as director, he and his wife, Joan Auden, continued to pursue his fondness for travel and nature.

Ed was fun loving, kind and loved being social with everyone. He also enjoyed helping others and was handy with any renovation. He and Joan built a cottage at White Lake that was his pride and joy. They loved building projects together.

Unfortunately, Ed was diagnosed with dementia in 2013. Eventually he moved to The Perley Health Residence for long-term care where he received incredible support.

Missing him terribly are his wife Joan, sister Jean, son Jay (Trina Wall), daughter Christine (Graham Eisenhauer) and Joan’s children Jennifer, Andrea and Gareth. Ed was a beloved Opa to Laura, Julia, Jack, Camille, Mila, Braedon, Audrey and Spencer.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Ave., Ottawa, on June 12th at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Abbotsford House or the Perley Rideau Health Centre, or charity of your choice.

Dear Ed was one of the finest people I've ever had the honour to know and call a friend. I've long mourned that dimentia should strike so noble a soul, but Joan's love and commitment to Ed was a balm through the years of their union. Rest in Peace.

Ed was a very calm, kind and special person. I loved his wonderful sense of humour... My heart goes out to Joan. She was there for Ed, to the end, assisting with his daily care. She too is a very calm, kind and special person... I wish Joan and Ed's family peace and fond remembrances...

Ed, along with you, was so very supportive, kind and welcoming to Gerry and I those many years ago. Ed was a lovely human being and his presence will stay here with those who were influenced by him and his life. Condolences to you, Joan, and to all his families. Susan

Dear Joan, what a terrible loss. I was so very sorry to read about Ed. Please think about a train ride to Hamilton to help you recover in the next month or three. Doyne

Dear Joan, I will always remember Ed’s smile ; his beautiful warm and welcoming smile. I know the last few years must have been incredibly difficult for you, through it all you have kept this calm and strong dedication and determination. Something I admire in you. It must have been painful to watch Ed, the love of your life loosing himself to this devastating disease. I hope the memories of your wonderful marriage, and all those memories of the two of you together will always be with you and bring you warm feelings. Eveline
